Method to Obtain Controlled Pretilt and Azimuth Angles in a Liquid Crystal Cell

We disclose a new method of preparing liquid crystal alignment layers that can produce controllable pretilt angles from near 0 to near 90.degree.. It is based on the stacking of two alignment materials sequentially, with the first one being continuous and the second one being discontinuous leaving part of the first layer exposed.
